Under direction, supervises subordinate officers and firefighters. Responsible for an assigned fire station, its apparatus, related fire/rescue equipment and personnel. Supervisory responsibility includes activities at a fire scene and/or other emergency, at a station and all assigned staff as engineers, firefighters, and other specialists. Supervisory responsibility at a fire scene and/or other emergency while on the emergency includes work in combating, extinguishing, and preventing fire. Assists with planning, organizing, and directing specific activities within the department. Handles all personnel problems at their station.
Essential Functions of the Job: Command a firefighting company or assigned firefighters and lower ranking officers. Assists in fire ground tactics including firefighting to control, extinguish, and prevent fires. Command a firefighting company or assigned members in other emergency and non-emergency calls. Assists in operations that the department is called upon to respond to and bring various situations under control. Responsible for the discipline, efficiency, safe practices, and use of proper equipment of his assigned members, both in quarters, on the drill yard or training grounds, and on the scene of a fire or other emergency; and for the maintenance and protection of all departmental property assigned to his command. Responsible to make sure members assigned to their station are attending training. Determines tactics for the emergency; initiates necessary operational objectives at the scene of an emergency; and directs firefighting operation until a higher-ranking officer arrives and command is transferred. Preserves the fire scene and protects all evidence until the Arson investigator arrives on the scene when a fire of suspicious nature of origin is suspected. Shall enforce all department rules, regulations, SOG’s. Shall serve as a member of the Training Committee. Shall meet with the Chief, and Assistant Chief at least weekly to discuss, receive, or relay any pertinent information relating to SVFD policies, practices, and communications.
